Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments, connective tissues and internal organs functioning smoothly together.
Our Osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, using touch and physical manipulation to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and create the perfect conditions to facilitate the body’s own healing mechanisms. Every treatment is tailor-made to the individual's concerns that day, whether it is neck pain from overuse or post-surgical recovery. People from all walks of life with any condition find Osteopathy eases their symptoms.
Our Osteopaths also provide advice on posture, health and exercise to aid recovery and prevent symptoms recurring, to promote health and quality of life.
Structural Osteopathy is helpful in the treatment of all musculoskeletal complaints. For example:
- Sporting injuries
- Disc herniation or prolapse
- Occupational Overuse
- Joint pain including Arthritis
- Back and limb pain
- Headaches, migraines, sinus problems
- Postural support and maintenance during and after pregnancy
- Debilitatory disease; CF, muscular dystrophy
Cranial Osteopathy is highly beneficial for both babies and adults. In adults it is used for symptoms which relate to congestion and compression such as migraines, sinus or jaw problems, stress relief, energy levels, and sleeping problems.
Cranial Osteopathy or Cranio-sacral therapy is a gentle and non-invasive form of Osteopathy that focuses on the subtle movement of the cranium (skull). Cranial Osteopaths are trained to feel the subtle, rhythmic pattern of cranial rhythm in movement or shape changes which occur in the cranium. By gently working with this rhythm the restrictions are eased, misaligned bones are restored to their proper position and the movement of cerebral spinal fluid through the spinal cord can be optimized, allowing the body to restore itself to normal health.
In newborns or babies it’s used to encourage natural development. Retained birth compression can occur during and after the compressive forces of labour and delivery. By releasing this tension from the babies’ body, symptoms such as head asymmetries, fractious crying and irritability, feeding problems, reflux, colic, and recurrent ear infections can be improved or resolved.
In summary Cranial Osteopathy is beneficial for babies with:
- Excessive crying and irritability
- Feeding difficulties; attachment, suckling
- Colic or Reflux
- Sleep disturbances
- Head shape asymmetry/concerns about limb clicking
- Recurrent ear infections and glue ear
- Sinus problems and mouth breathing
- Some cases of hyperactivity or behavioural problems i.e. head-banging
